Abstract

Representation occupies a paradoxical position in landscape design: omnipresent in practice, yet rarely examined as a site of reasoning in its own right. In a contemporary context marked by uncertainty, extended temporal horizons, and collective forms of authorship, this research asks how design thinking operates when projects remain open, revisable, and projected across time, and how representation contributes to sustaining such processes.
Drawing on extensive archival research, interviews, and visual analysis, the study examines the work of Yves Brunier (1962–1991) as a historically situated case, reconstructing his practice within the experimental design cultures of the 1980s—between the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage in Versailles and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. Structured around three operative frameworks—the ground, the void, and the living—the research approaches representation as an epistemic environment in which spatial knowledge is produced through material and collaborative practices. In this sense, Brunier’s work serves as a lens through which questions of open-endedness, temporality, and authorship can be rethought.
