Intelligent Fabrication Symposium 2025
The symposium is hosted within the broader Intelligent Fabrication workshop, an annual 8-day event dedicated to full-scale construction, bio- and geo-sourced materials, digital design, and sustainability. It serves as a bridge between education, research, and professional practice.
This year’s edition explores the theme of bending, using slender wooden strips - 7cm wide and over 7m long - as the primary material for hands-on experimentation and architectural exploration.

About the Symposium
The symposium brings together academics and practitioners who are pioneering hands-on and research-based approaches in architecture and engineering education.
The programme includes:
- Lectures (09:00–13:00) moderated by Klaas De Rycke (ÉNSA Versailles, LéaV):
- Dieter Dietz (EPFL, Lausanne)
- Mathilde Marengo (IAAC, Barcelona)
- Oliver Wilton (UCL Bartlett, London)
- Laurens Luyten (KU Leuven)
- Guillaume Ramilien (ÉNSA Versailles)
- Round Table Discussion (14:00–17:00)
On pedagogy, material experimentation, bio- and geo-sourced materials, fabrication as a potential input for design, 1:1 scale exploration, and empirical research in architecture and student-making.
The symposium is part of the EXPLEARN network. It fosters dialogue between schools of architecture, research units and institutions across Europe around the values of eco-responsibility, experiential learning and holistic design approaches.
