In June and July 2014, the city of Versailles will host the SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE 2014 (SD) on a site located within the park of Versailles castle. Created in 2002 by the US Department of Energy, the Solar Decathlon is an international competition between universities and engineering schools to design a passive solar habitat. Up to 300 000 visitors will come to Versailles to visit the 20 prototypes designed by international teams from 16 different countries.
The student will beasked to design a SOLAR BOX along the alleys that lead to the SOLAR DECATHLON site, to act as signal and allow the visitors to experience different properties of the sun. The SOLAR BOX will punctuate the visitor’s journey to the site through the park. They should offer a place to engage an architectural conversation with the sun. The challenge is to develop projects that can raise the public awareness of the sun as an architectural material.
